Basilica di San Petronio

The basilica of San Petronio is the main church of Bologna: it dominates the front of Piazza Maggiore and, despite being largely unfinished, it is the sixth largest church in Europe. Its impressive dimensions make it the fourth largest church in Italy. The basilica is the largest brick church built of bricks in the world. It has the title of minor basilica.
Dedicated to San Petronio, the patron saint of the city, its foundation dates back to 7 June 1390 with the laying of the first stone in a solemn procession. In 1388, the Council of the seventeenth century of the City of Bologna, in recognition of the commitment spent by the Bishop Petronio (fifth century), elevated to the rank of Patron of the city in 1253, decided to start the construction of a temple dedicated to him.
This is the last great late Gothic work of Italy, which began shortly after the Milan Cathedral.
