Città Alta

Bergamo Alta is a medieval city, surrounded by ramparts erected in the 16th century, during the Venetian domination, which added to the pre-existing fortifications in order to make it an impregnable fortress.

The best known and most frequented part of Bergamo Alta is Piazza Vecchia, with the Contarini fountain, the Palazzo della Ragione, the civic tower, which still today at 10 pm shells 100 shots - those that in the past announced the nightly closing of the Venetian walls - and other buildings that surround it on all sides. On the opposite side of the Palazzo della Ragione, the large white building of Palazzo Nuovo houses the Angelo Mai Public Library.
Beyond the Palazzo della Ragione are the Cathedral of Sant'Alessandro, the Colleoni Chapel, the Baptistery and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Via Colleoni, also known as Corsaröla, connects Piazza Vecchia to Piazza della Cittadella and is the heart of the upper town. In Piazza della Cittadella there are the Civic Archaeological Museum and the "Enrico Caffi" Museum of Natural Sciences, not far from which you can visit the Fountain of Lantro, located near the church of San Lorenzo. Among other religious architecture, the church of San Michele al Pozzo Bianco.

Città Alta, as well as hosting a botanical garden in Via Colle Aperto, is also home to the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Bergamo, whose prestige is recognized in Europe.
