Duomo di Milano

Milan Cathedral is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Milan. Symbol of the Lombard capital, and located in the homonymous square in the center of the metropolis, it is dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente. It is the largest church in Italy, the fourth in the world by surface, the sixth by volume. It is home to the parish of Santa Tecla in the Duomo of Milan.

Started in 1386 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, it was built in over five centuries and underwent numerous modifications and modernizations over time. Today the Cathedral looks like a real triumph of pinnacles, spiers, buttresses, flying buttresses, wonderful windows. Initially the project had to follow the stylistic features of Lombard Gothic. But the decision of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Lord of Milan and founder of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, to use Candoglia marble instead of brick, as was the tradition at that time, provoked a revolution in style that forced the factory to search engineers, architects, sculptors and expert stonemasons of Central European Gothic in the construction sites of cathedrals of half of Europe. Thus was born the Gothic detail of the Duomo and also for this reason it is not possible to trace back to a sure paternity of the one who took care of the delicate initial phase of planning.
