Foro Romano

The Roman Forum is an archaeological area of Rome enclosed between the Palatine Hill, the Campidoglio, Via dei Fori Imperiali and the Colosseum, consisting of the stratification of the remains of those buildings and monuments of heterogeneous epochs that for much of the ancient history of Rome represented the political, legal, religious and economic center of the city of Rome, as well as the nerve center of the entire Roman civilization.
From the royal age up to the advent of the Middle Ages, the Foro valley was the theater of events and the seat of institutions of such importance that it has repeatedly determined the historical course of Western civilization, and has had a predominant influence on the political, juridical, cultural and philosophical bases of Western thought.
After a period of decline that began in the Late Antiquity, the Roman Forum was subject to frequent spoliations and changes in use, until it found itself, in the 16th century, almost completely buried and permanently used as a pasture for cattle, from which the nickname of Campo Vaccino.
Thanks to the impressive urban restructuring of post-unification Italy and the fascist period, the area of the Forum was gradually brought to light, studied, and museumized, becoming with the Colosseum and the Palatine one of the most distinguished and visited archaeological sites in the world .
