Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a shopping mall in Milan which, in the form of a covered pedestrian street, connects Piazza Duomo to Piazza della Scala. Due to the presence of elegant shops and clubs, from its inauguration it was the meeting place of the Milanese bourgeoisie, so much so that it was nicknamed the "salotto of Milan": built in neo-Renaissance style, it is one of the most famous examples of European iron architecture and represents the archetype of the nineteenth-century shopping arcade. Called simply "the Gallery" by the Milanese, it is often considered one of the first examples of a shopping center in the world.

Assigned the construction contract to the English company City of Milan Improvements Company Limited, the ceremony for the laying of the first stone by King Vittorio Emanuele II took place on 7 March 1865 in the presence of many authorities. The works, excluding the triumphal entry arch, were completed in less than three years, a period in which the official inauguration of the Gallery was followed by the king. The completion of the works will not take place so smoothly and the actual conclusion of the works will be only in 1876 when the entrance arch and the northern porticoes of Piazza Duomo will be completed.

The main entrance arch on Piazza del Duomo was conceived both for its structure and for its dimensions to resemble a real triumphal arch. The main arch is divided into three parts, they are divided horizontally into two orders. The lower order is the lowest level of transition between the two. The upper floor is steep with the mullioned windows in place of the arch. The entrance arch complex is slightly jutting out from the palace of the northern arcades to be highlighted. On the fastigio, which reaches 32 meters above the ground, the dedication of the Gallery is written: «A VITTORIO EMANUELE II. I MILANESI»
