Teatro alla Scala

The Teatro alla Scala is the main opera house in Milan. Considered as one of the most prestigious theaters in the world, it has hosted for the last 240 years the main artists in the international field of opera, and, more generally, classical music, often commissioning works still on display in the major theaters in the world.

It was built in accordance with a decree of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria issued at the request of wealthy Milanese palchettiste of the "Regio Ducale", the old Milanese court theater destroyed in a fire that broke out on February 26, 1776, and inaugurated the 3rd August 1778 with "L'Europa recognized" composed for the occasion by Antonio Salieri. The theater was built in place of the church of Santa Maria alla Scala, from which it took its name (the church took its name from its founder, Regina della Scala, from the Scaliger dynasty of Verona), whose demolition work began 5 August 1776.
At the time the theater was not just a place for entertainment: the audience was often used for dancing, the boxes were used by the owners to receive guests, eat and manage their social life, in the reduced and in another space corresponding to the fifth order of boxes was gambled, since 1788 it was in fact strictly forbidden to play in the city, with the only exception of theaters in show time.

Starting from the year of foundation it is the seat of the homonymous choir, of the orchestra, of the Corps de Ball, and from 1982 also of the Philharmonic. The theater complex is located in the square of the same name, flanked by the Casino Ricordi, now home to the La Scala Theater Museum.
